I think we’ve got a lovely selection of yarn for you this week, including the return of some old favourites, such as Helena 4ply. I know I’m biased, but I think Tony has outdone himself recently! Here are some that really stood out to me from this week’s update:
Sophia 2ply Kickshaw
Eva 2ply Happily Ever After (this week’s cover shot)
Eva 2ply Midas
Daisy 2ply Mardy
Daisy 2ply Creeper
Diana 2ply Ribbons
Diana 2ply Foliage
Diana 2ply Cad
I’ll show you more of my favourites tomorrow.
Sorry, didn’t mean to go AWOL on you there. But what with one thing (being ill) and another (having house guests) half of this week has gone past before I could catch my breath. Anyway, here’s one of the things I wanted to show you this week:
I decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to knit Tony an Aran sweater, but search as I might, I couldn’t find a pattern that I liked. So after some dithering, I decided to be brave and design my own. I’m basing it loosely on Elizabeth Zimmermann’s percentage system. I say loosely, because I couldn’t quite face knitting it in the round, so I’m knitting it flat and seaming afterwards. Its one thing to steek a Fair Isle sweater (not that I’ve attempted that yet!), its another to steek a great big man’s sweater. I’m just not that brave yet.
So, I’ve taken a basic sweater template, and plugged in some cable designs. I’ve nearly completed the first sleeve (aran weight knits up so fast!) and am really enjoying it so far. I deliberately chose stitch patterns that had the same number of row repeats, and also they have the cable rows in the same place, so in a 12 row repeat, I only have to cable on Row 5 and 11. So its zipping along nicely. The body will be a little more challenging, as it has an extra cable design on it that has a different row number to the other two cables, but we’ll face that when we come to it.
The yarn I am using is Donegal Tweed, in a gentle oatmeal. I have to keep stopping knitting to bury my face in it and have a good long sniff. It smells of sheep in the very best possible way. I love that smell. I’m picturing Tony wearing this sweater with some jumbo cord trousers, striding across the moorlands, looking rugged and manly, sheepdog at his heels.
This week I was also going to show you some spinning I’ve been doing, but that will have to wait until next week now, as the rest of the week’s blogs will be jampacked with lovely yarn photos. This week’s update is a zinger! But I haven’t even started getting it ready, so I’d better get on with it now…….
Some more of my favourites from this week:
Sylvia 4ply Versailles
Sylvia 4ply State
Sylvia 4ply Ritual (this week’s cover shot)
Sylvia 4ply Harlequin
Daisy 4ply Decorous
The shop preview is now up. See you on Sunday!
PS. Our house guests are staying over Monday & Tuesday, so I don’t know if I’ll have time to blog until the middle of the week. But I’ve got lots to show you, including a new sweater project that I’m designing as I go along, and some spinning!
My apologies for being so quiet this week. It’s been a slightly trying week, what with one thing and another. I’ve been ill, on and off, so have been doing a bit of work, resting, doing a bit of work, resting. And we had no staff to help us this week either, due to illness (not the same kind!) so I’ve had more to do than usual. Imagine, I had to do the packing myself this week! Me! A VIP!! Lol. Anyway, besides all that going on, we’ve been at the peak of chaos with the kitchen renovations, and when you have a very small house, and have your workspace within that house, it’s almost impossible to prevent any disruption. So that’s been challenging. Thankfully the kitchen is almost complete now, and all the messy stuff is finished. In fact, after I finish today’s blog, I’m off to clean and tidy. I hope to have the house in apple pie order by the weekend, when we have friends coming for a visit.
So while I’m elbow deep in plaster dust and wood shavings, here’s some yarn candy for you to peruse:
Sylvia 2ply Gone Fishing (he wishes!)
Sylvia 2ply Waterlily
Sylvia 2ply Party
Sylvia 2ply Anthem
Diana 2ply Idle (I wish!)
Diana 2ply Sun King
Diana 2ply Byron
Diana 2ply Prudent
More picks tomorrow!
On Friday, the August shipment of the sock club was shipped out. This time, members got a skein of Martha, our deliciously soft cashmere/merino/nylon blend.
I think this one is going to be our most popular club colourway to date, but I won’t say any more for fear of spoiling it for members who like a surprise. Suffice to say, it’s a semi-solid shade that sings with intense colour. Here are some pattern suggestions that I think would complement this yarn beautifully:
Minerva’s Tower Socks
Summer Lovin’ Socks
A Finer Peace Socks
Falling Leaves Cowl
Red Rock Road Socks
Cinnamon Grace Scarf
I hope you love this month’s yarn, and I’m looking forward to seeing what you all make with it!
